The 18th edition of the Fiba World Basketball Championship is in full swing in China at eight different venues – and we are about to reach the quarter-finals. While it’s usually held every four years, there’s a long wait for basketball fans this time, as the tournament is delayed by a year, which means it’s now out of synch with the FIFA World Cup for the first time. There is also a new enhanced format, in which 32 teams from the previous 24 participate.
The US enters the tournament as a two-time defending champion and clear favorite and wants to be the first nation to win the World Cup three times straight away. They are next to France and have not shown any signs of disappointment despite the lack of big names from the NBA. Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, Kyrie Irving, Paul George and Anthony Davis all withdrew from the squad before the tournament even started.
And all in all, the pursuers look this time stronger than ever. Serbia and Spain could be real competitors and have certainly made it to the last sixteen. They meet Argentina and Poland, while Australia face the Czech Republic in their fourth and last match.
Beyond the tournament, more is at stake – the FIBA World Championship qualifies for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo this year. Seven of the twelveplaces are to be awarded (the two best from Europe and America) with the best from Africa, Asia and Oceania).
